Volcanic mountains, spruce forests and the 12 Apostoli rocks

The Călimani are volcanic mountains, and their highest peak, Pietrosul, stands at 2,100 m. Since 2000, part of them has been a national park, covering more than 24,000 hectares. On the plateau stand the 12 Apostoli rocks, blocks of volcanic rock that wind and frost have carved into strange shapes.

Gura Haitii, where the trails start, is ~50 minutes from the cabins. The climb to the Pietrele Roșii glade and back takes ~4 hours, or ~6 hours if you go on to the rocks.

Getting there

Take the DN17 to Vatra Dornei, then the DJ174 south to Șaru Dornei, where the park’s visitor centre is and where you buy your ticket. From there, the DJ174F takes you through Neagra Șarului to Gura Haitii. The trail starts at the fork in the village: walk ~1 km along the forest road on the right, as far as the trail’s signboards.
